Welcome to clipboard, a newsletter about good shit in Tāmaki Makaurau by me, Reilly Hodson. This week, an adjustment to this newsletter. If you enjoy clipboard, share it with your friend who insists on drinking only black coffee and won’t shut up about it.
a scheduling announcement
This July, clipboard, a newsletter I started at the end of university, in between lockdowns, turned 2 years old. That might not sound like a very long time, but I’ve started my fair share of blogs and internet projects in my time, and this is by far the longest I’ve been able to commit to something.
Two years later, there are hundreds of you that read clipboard every week, and I’ve met great new people and even got some paid work through writing about my silly interests, which is very good. By most measures, it’s been a success.
However, in the past couple of months, I’ve been thinking about what to do with this thing, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t really have the time, or mental capacity, to keep putting out something worth reading every Sunday. I have a day job, after all, so occasionally I feel like I’m dialling this newsletter in as I write on a Saturday.
So, in order to stave off another bout of burnout, I’ve decided to unshackle myself from the self-imposed requirement to churn out one of these newsletters every Sunday at 7am, and allow myself to be a bit more infrequent and choosy with when I publish.
For me, that means taking a bit more time and only publishing when I have something worth sharing. I have ideas of things to write about, but taking more than a day on the weekend to think them through will, I think, mean I feel like I’m providing better insight.
For you, that means I won’t be in your inbox every Sunday, necessarily, but when it does land, it’ll be much more worth reading - deeper dives, more Q&As with interesting people, perhaps more of a visual element (although despite taking year 12 photography, it’s not my #1 skill). I also still love the “clips” format, so I’ll aim to put out a jumbo-sized clips-only issue once a month, packed with new openings, things I want to buy, articles worth reading, all that good stuff.
I’m still making all this up as I go along, so I’d love to hear your thoughts: what are your favourite bits of clipboard? Anything you’d like to hear more about? Should I start an advice column, or TikTok account? Reply to this email and let me know.
Until next time,
Reilly
