Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about good shit in Tāmaki Makaurau, by me, Reilly Hodson. This week, my picks from a few sales going on at the moment. If you enjoy clipboard, share it with the cool acquaintance who you mostly just message on Instagram and are too scared to ask for coffee.
winter sale season
I have a love-hate relationship with sale season. At their worst, sales encourage overconsumption and lead to the devaluation of the labour and care that goes into making things. At their best, though, sales provide a more affordable route into luxury items, and when the prices of everything are heading up, it’s hard to be mad at something getting less expensive.
Despite the cold weather lingering, we’re solidly in winter sale season, so I thought I would share some picks for your consideration from my favourite stores’ discount sections. These are pieces I’d gladly pay full price for, but recommend a little bit extra now they’re cheaper.
This is the best new piece in my wardrobe this season - comfortable, sharp, and plenty warm for colder weather. Now, you can get it cut price, and I guarantee you won’t regret it. Check out the rest of Thom’s archive, as well, there’s plenty of deals there.
Good as Gold store manager Raag, pictured above, is one of the best dressed people I’ve ever met, and these trousers look excellent. I struggle to find good trousers, so I recommend buying up when you find a pair with your desired fit.

Everyday Needs in Ponsonby is my favourite store to browse, and these vases always catch my eye when I’m in the store. Perfect for storing your trendy poppy buds!
Crane Brothers is an expensive brand, there’s no escaping it. Buying on the sale, then, is the perfect way to get in! These trousers are a great piece, very versatile and well-made. Pair with brown RM Williams to look like a private-schooled investment banker on the weekend.
Inward Goods is excellent value at full price, so a discount is next level! I like this shirt, but the warehouse sale has plenty of good finds.

Good friend of clipboard Mitchell Tan, proprietor of Rubbish Bin, is selling these excellent graphic tees, printed on the Doug’s Mighty blank. They’re on preorder until this Friday, so get in quick!
The local elections are coming up, and it’s incredibly important to vote! The latest episode of Gone By Lunchtime is a great place to start getting clued up on the key players (although Leo Molloy is already goneburger).
As a former student of a prestigious, all-boys school, I’ve been sadly unsurprised by the news about Sam Uffindell. Mad Chapman at the Spinoff has the best take. Also, my sister-in-law, Ella Stewart, has an insightful piece in RNZ about the terrible culture at schools like King’s.
Having tried it on, I can confirm that this new, block printed striped shirt from Checks Downtown is a banger. The straight hem! The handmade feel of the print! Excellent stuff.
Metro’s Best of Auckland feature from earlier this year is online now, featuring great recommendations from around this excellent city, including an unsurprising shout out from yours truly.
An excellent article exploring whether it is truly classist to tell people not to buy fast fashion (spoiler - probably not).
Your regular surprising Loaded find: the purple Teddy Santis New Balances in a size 9, sitting there for the taking!
That’s all for clipboard this week, thanks for reading! I’ll be back here next Sunday morning, and in the meantime you can stay in touch on Instagram or via email. See you later!
