Welcome to clipboard, a semi-regular newsletter about good shit in Tāmaki Makaurau, by me, Reilly Hodson. This issue is the first of my new, refreshed monthly clips-only issues. All good stuff, no filler. If you enjoy clipboard, share it with your cool young aunty.
spring!
It’s already October, which means it’s time for the first monthly clipsTM issue, where I share all the good stuff I collected from the month that was. September has been a pretty good month for me - when the sun starts to come out more regularly and the clock shifts, I realise just how much of my mental wellbeing relies on good weather. Let’s get into the links!
I’ve been loving the new season of Alice Snedden’s Bad News from the Spinoff. Alice takes a nuanced look at some of the thornier issues of our time, and manages to introduce laughter as well
My favourite menswear writer, Derek Guy of Die, Workwear, has been writing a series called ‘How to Develop Good Taste.’ It takes an academic look at something we often assume is innate rather than learned, and has prompted me more than once to highlight and screenshot a particularly good quote.
We bought Duck Island’s toasted marshmallow ice cream at the supermarket the other day, delicious stuff!
The new issue of Metro, including its Top 50 restaurants (packed with clipboard faves and new additions to my ‘must visit’ list) is absolutely excellent, and has perhaps their best cover since the magazine revived itself post-Covid.
Ensemble has started a wedding section, and as a future married person, it’s packed with excellent inspo and an insight into just how many logistics are ahead of me one day
You’ve probably read Izzy Cook’s mum’s response to Heather du Plessis-Allan’s interview of her daughter already, but if not, it’s worth a read. Time for us to stop scapegoating individuals instead of solving the root problems of climate change, in my opinion
I love daylight saving time! It should be this time all year round, if you ask me
Checks Downtown has been on a tear this spring/summer season. I love this vest, this cap, and these shorts
I’ve been watching both the big-budget fantasy prequel series, and this might be unpatriotic, but House of the Dragon > Rings of Power
Instagram is becoming a garbage fire of increasing size, but the page which just posts interiors from Nora Ephron movies is a rare highlight
On a similar note, I love Vogue’s YouTube series Objects of Affection. Like Architectural Digest’s home tours, but with people who actually live in their homes and made the design decisions themselves
In my spare time, I’m a tech nerd, and my favourite website for tech news The Verge got a great new redesign this month. Love cool websites!
Honest and Flight Coffee are running a series of Saturday markets, packed with nearly every single cool business in Tāmaki: Inward Goods, Almighty, Waves Vintage, Matt Nash Uniform and many many more!
It’s not too late to vote in the local elections! If you want to find out more about who to vote for, head to policy.nz and do your research. The council is responsible for many of the most important stuff about our city - transport, housing, cultural spaces, so having your say is very important!
That’s all for this month, thanks for reading! I’ll be back in your inbox in a little while with the next issue of clipboard, and at the end of the month with more clips! In the meantime, you can follow clipboard on Instagram or flick me an email. See you around!
